(English) Towards Greener Horizons: Joining Forces to Optimize Offshore Wind Farms for Sustainability

WIND FARM HAPTICAs the global focus on renewable energy intensifies, offshore wind farms have emerged as a key contributor to clean and sustainable power generation. However, maximizing their potential while minimizing environmental and socio-economic impacts requires innovative solutions and comprehensive assessments. Haptic R&D Consulting, involved in business tech innovation consultancy expertise, is actively seeking to be part of new consortia for the Horizon Europe grant call: „Minimisation of environmental and optimization of socio-economic impacts in the deployment, operation, and decommissioning of offshore wind farms.”

Addressing Key Outcomes for Enhanced Sustainability:
The Horizon Europe grant call emphasizes several outcomes that align perfectly with Haptic R&D Consulting’s mission to drive sustainability and foster holistic solutions. By participating in the first action, our expertise aims to contribute to at least three of the following outcomes:

a) Enhanced sustainability by addressing economic, social, and environmental aspects of offshore wind farms, including air pollution, waste management, health and safety, job opportunities, and wildlife concerns.
b) Improved overall sustainability of large-scale offshore wind farm production through mainstreamed Life Cycle Analysis, encompassing social, economic, and environmental aspects, while focusing on improved circularity of offshore wind turbines.
c) Advancement in understanding the negative and positive impacts of offshore wind farms throughout their lifetime.
d) Development of innovative and cost-effective solutions for the construction and decommissioning of offshore wind farms, with a specific focus on minimizing potential impacts on biodiversity, protected species, and habitats.

Scope and Actions:
To address the aforementioned outcomes, Haptic R&D Consulting aims to develop and promote the use of modeling tools and objective holistic assessment metrics. These tools will enable realistic in-depth analysis of the cumulative impacts of wind installations on the environment and local communities. Integrating these tools into the design process for deploying and decommissioning offshore wind farms is vital. Additionally, innovative solutions will be sought to minimize environmental impact during all stages of the wind farm life cycle, with a particular emphasis on construction and decommissioning. An assessment framework will be established, allowing for nature-inclusive design options and valuing „created habitats” versus „natural habitats.”

The Horizon Europe grant call offers two key actions, both of which Haptic R&D Consulting is eager to contribute to:

Action 1: Developing design tools that facilitate planning for offshore floating and fixed-bottom wind farms, with a primary focus on minimizing overall life-cycle environmental impacts. This includes considering noise, seabed impact, visual effects, and effects on marine life and other species. The tools will aim to reduce the carbon footprint of offshore wind plants across the entire life cycle, from construction to end-of-life, ensuring environmental impact reduction at each step.

Action 2: Proposing innovative and cost-effective solutions for all phases of the wind farm life cycle, particularly installation, construction, and decommissioning. The objective is to minimize the environmental impact during these stages and drive sustainability through improved processes, planning, supply chains, and construction materials.

Collaboration and Integration:
To maximize the effectiveness of design tools and innovative solutions, Haptic R&D Consulting emphasizes the importance of engaging diverse stakeholders. Regulatory bodies, industry players, governments, and citizens must come together in consortia, fostering collaboration and integration. By leveraging the collective expertise and knowledge of these stakeholders, Haptic R&D Consulting seeks to create comprehensive and implementable recommendations that consider sustainability and environmental impacts when tendering future offshore wind farm projects.

Haptic R&D Consulting’s aspiration to be part of the Horizon Europe grant consortia reflects our commitment to driving innovation, sustainability, and positive socio-economic impacts in the offshore wind industry.
