The Innovative Health Initiative Joint Undertaking (IHI JU) has announced a new funding call aimed at accelerating the development of transformative health innovations. This ambitious initiative focuses on exploiting the full potential of digitalisation and data exchange in healthcare to address pressing public health needs and drive the digital transformation of Europe’s health industry.

This funding opportunity aligns with Specific Objective 4 of the IHI JU Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA), which emphasizes leveraging interoperable and high-quality data, m-health and e-health technologies, and advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to create impactful healthcare solutions.

Transformative Impacts on Healthcare Innovation

Projects funded under this call are expected to make significant contributions in several key areas:

  1. FAIR Data and Integrated Solutions:
    • Improve the availability of interoperable, quality data adhering to the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles.
    • Facilitate research and the development of integrated health products and services.
  2. Enhancing Patient-Centric Insights:
    • Utilize m-health and e-health technologies to better understand the challenges and real-life behaviors of patients with chronic diseases and co-morbidities.
  3. Advancing AI in Healthcare:
    • Enable clinical decision support for more accurate diagnoses and effective treatments.
    • Accelerate time-to-market for health technologies.
    • Widen the availability of personalized health interventions and demonstrate the added value of AI tools through improved methodologies that reduce bias.
  4. Boosting EU Health Industry Competitiveness:
    • Foster European leadership in integrated health solutions and drive the digital transformation of the health sector.
    • Stimulate economic activity and technological innovation within the EU, aligning with major initiatives like the European Green Deal, Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, and the European Health Data Space (EHDS).

Expected Outcomes for Projects

Proposals submitted under this call must deliver results that address public health needs while fostering the development of healthcare innovations that are:

  • Safe, effective, and patient-centered
  • Cost-effective and affordable for healthcare systems
  • Scalable and interoperable

Key themes include precision diagnostics, prevention, personalized medicine, chronic disease management, and sustainability. Projects may also explore enabling technologies such as AI, digital data solutions, and implementation science for integrating research outcomes into everyday healthcare practices.

    • Proposals must target diseases with high societal and economic burdens or deliver transformational innovation in areas like health data analytics.
  2. Translating Research into Solutions:
    • Demonstrate the ability to implement innovative solutions into fragmented European healthcare ecosystems or industrial processes.
  3. Ensuring Patient-Centricity and Open Science:
    • Integrate patient-focused approaches, leveraging health technologies and social innovation while considering demographic trends.
  4. Regulatory Readiness and Synergies:
    • Develop a regulatory strategy to align outputs with EU health regulations, including the forthcoming European Health Data Space Regulation.
    • Avoid duplication by aligning with existing EU initiatives, such as the European Virtual Human Twins Initiative and the EU AI Act.

Strengthening EU Policies and Initiatives

This call also seeks to support key EU policies and frameworks, such as:
