INNOspace Masters – “Bake in Space” wins

 At the INNOspace Masters awards ceremony in Berlin during the ESA BIC Startup‐Challenge, Sebastian Marcu, Managing Director of Bake in Space GmbH from Bremen, won an overall award for his project ‘Bake in Space’. Behind the project is the slogan “Fresh bread rolls for astronauts”. A space‐qualified oven for baking and a suitable dough mixture are being developed to achieve this. This supply of fresh food is especially interesting with regard to the long‐term missions of tomorrow.

MESA, a modular and stackable rocket structural element, took second place in the ESA BIC Startup‐Challenge. It provides faster and more affordable access into space for CubeSats, in‐orbit demonstrations and experiments. Third place was taken by RML Spacelab, a multipurpose, floating platform for vertical take‐off missiles, which is very easy to transport. Thanks to its flexible use in international waters, it also offers an affordable launching option for non‐certified test rockets.

Thorsten Rudolph, Managing Director of Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen (AZO), the organiser of the INNOspace Masters, announced in his honorific speech: “The ESA BIC Startup‐Challenge has presented brand new innovations in terms of launchers, satellites, payload and ISS. This is a clear indication that the NewSpace industry in Germany is supporting the commercialisation of the aerospace industry with fresh ideas in order to accelerate this.”

The ESA BIC Start‐up Challenge focuses on new business ideas and models for the next generation of aerospace for
commercial use. The aim of the ESA BIC Start‐up Challenge is to find and incubate start‐ups with innovative ideas. This means that these are prepared for their target market with the entire value creation chain in one of the two German business incubation centres, ESA BIC Bavaria or ESA BIC Darmstadt.

Out of 66 project proposals for the whole ideas competition INNOspace Masters 2017, nine drafts made it into the final round. The aim of the INNOspace Masters was to find applications that improve the development and production of satellites, payloads and launcher systems.

The German Minister for Economics and Federal Government Commissioner for Aerospace, Brigitte Zypries, announced the idea “Wall#E” from the Institute for Space Systems at TU Braunschweig as the overall winner of the
INNOspace Masters. This project also impressed the jury of the “DLR Space Administration Challenge”, which concentrates on the research and development phase. The “MSP” (Modular MicroSatellite Production) project from the Zentrum für Telematik e.V. in Würzburg was named the winner of the “Airbus Defence and Space Challenge”.
